Re: Red wine
Cheers lads, I’ve decided that the next time I’m in the Jalon Valley I’m going to book a wine tasting experience at one of the bodegas.
Give it another try, as said earlier the wine is almost cheaper than water and the locals love it.

Red Wine is part of my DNA!

But I get your point - I've never been able to like the taste of Champagne regardless of how expensive the bottle is or not.

I just don't like it.

Re: Red wine
South of a certain line marked roughly by Lyon and Budapest, lunch is often a local sausage and half a litre of local red (straight from the fridge) with plenty of water. I wouldn't knock it either as Spain has some of the best roads in Europe these days...

Re: Red wine
If you’ve bought a bottle you don’t like then fuck a load of Coca Cola into it 1:1 pour over ice into a highball glass garnish with a slice of Orange and hey presto! you’ve got Kalimotxo

(Kali-mocho)

It’s a Basque thing and it’s a bit of an acquired taste (it’s fucking vile hahaha!).

If you ever go to a routier (a French truck stop) they serve the red straight from the fridge.

Re: Red wine
Not surprising to find that there are quite a few posters on WHO who like a wine:)

But I do agree with the comments about the temperature can be lowered on some reds. Particularly the lighter-bodied ones.

One of my best recollections of a great "glass" of wine was in fact a stone beaker of wine on a hot day in S. W, France. It was poured from a stone jar which had been kept in a chilled Farmhouse pantry and served with bread and cheese.

Of course, often the experience adds to the taste. But that day taught me that red wine can be enjoyed at below room temperature. I don't keep red wine in the fridge but I do keep it in the cool.

Mind you the best bit of advice remains if you don't like red drink something else, and never worry about conventions like red with steak and white with fish. And IMO you cant beat a cold dry Rose with a curry but it is all down to your taste.

I don't like Champagne so I never drink it. Suggest you do the same with Red Wine

Probably something wrong with your nose - stuffed too much up it as a youth?. The majority of what we discern as taste comes from aroma. Taste (from the taste buds) is more about coarse detection than fine discrimination

Re: Red wine
As a French friend of mine pointed out "chambré" doesn't mean "room temperature", but "bedroom temperature".

Back in the day, bedrooms were designed to be cooler than dining rooms, so red wine was supposed to be drunk at a slightly lower temperature than the ambient.

Re: Red wine
The problem us brits always have is drinking red wine at fucking room temperature. There wasn't any central heating back in the day and wine was stored in cellars. As in cold. Pop the red wine of choice in the fridge. Tastes so much better cold. My choice is Penfolds Shiraz only £10 a bottle from Waitrose.

Try a Malbec, but only one from Mendoza (Argentina). Or a good claret (Bordeaux).

So what happens when you take a slice of cheddar, a Bath Oliver and add some good Rioja?

I defy you not to like the wine.

Re: Red wine
Right. I’ll try and help you.

1. Around 20% of the population are super tasters. These people generally taste bitterness more then the rest. You might be one.
2. Many red wines are matured in oak barrels that add tannins to the wine. Although many wines also get tannins from the grapes too. These will have both a bitter taste and a puckering drying taste on the palette. This sounds like what you are getting.
3. Most red wines are really best had with food because of number 2. Not all mind you. So most reds are not best drunk on their own.
4. There are some red wines that are not made like this and are fruity, fresh and can be drunk on their own. Beaujolais for example. There are many examples but you need to know what you are looking for. Or asking for.

If you dont like red wine drink something else. It might be that you just dont like it.

Admittedly, when I was young, wine was what you got when you left grapes at the back of the cave until they developed into something more interesting...

Re: Red wine
When I was young, my parents described red wine as "vinegar".

But I'd already discovered this wasn't the case by the time I was 15.

They discovered this some time later.

This may have been unfortunate, as it convinced me that all their advice was crap.

And sometimes it wasn't.

A nice Italian Appassimento for me.

Tesco do a very drinkable one for about 8 quid. Enjoy an expensive Rioja too given the chance.

All utter bollocks of course - you can drink wine out of a tea cup and it will taste as good or bad.

Only thing you can't do is drink it out of an enamel cup, which will fuck up the taste.

Re: Red wine
I wouldn't be a red wine 'fan'. Wife is partial to a glass so when we go out for dinner we'd get a bottle with dinner so I'm aware that there are loads of very pleasant red wines at all price levels.
There is a Portuguese duoro in Aldi that was very good value.

Get a good wine glass.
We have some Chef & Sommelier red wine glasses.

I love champagne but it's amazing the disparity in taste between one glass shape to another.

Get yourself some good glasses.

Probably a whole taste range then rather than just red wine you don't like.

What about mature cheddar - do you find it too much?
